New Degree students
Documents required for registration
You have been admitted to the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Helsinki. In order to get enrolled as a new degree student you need to return the following documents to the Faculty by the deadline given in the e-mail of acceptance (appr. within two weeks after receiving the e-mail):
- Confirmation Form
- Student Registration Form
- Original receipt of the Student Union (HYY) fee payment (bank transfer receipt / online banking printout )
- Officially certified copies of your Bachelor’s Diploma and final transcript, if the documents were not included in your application.
If you have not yet received your final diploma and transcript, you must return them by 31 July 2015. The copies of your diploma and the transcript ought to be officially certified by the degree awarding institution or a notary public (must bear the authentic stamp of the institution that issued the document). Please note that these documents should be sent to the Faculty of Social Sciences (instead of UAF).
Registration documents are to be delivered by mail (address: Faculty of Social Sciences, Academic Affairs Office, P.O. Box 54 (Unioninkatu 37), FI-00014 University of Helsinki, Finland) within two weeks after receiving the e-mail of acceptance. Please note that if you do not return the documents to the Academic Affairs Office of the Faculty by the given deadline, your study place will be given to the applicant in reserve and you will lose your study place.
If you fail to return your degree certificate and final transcript to the Academic Affairs Office of the Faculty by 31 July 2015, your study right will be cancelled.
N.B.! Please note that before starting your studies in September you need to present the original diploma of your Bachelor's degree. The diploma will be returned to you in October.
A first-year student may register as absent for the academic year for certain reasons only.
If you wish to register as non-attending you must present documents proving the legal grounds for your absence. You can find more information concerning non-attendance here.
Please note that some accepted students may be required to complete some supplementary studies. This information is included in the official letter of acceptance that will be sent to the accepted students by mid-May.

In addition to the Student Union (HYY) there are various student organisations operating within the Student Union. You can find Social sciences students' association CISSI on Facebook. You can also join the organisation, Tsemppi, representing international students of the University.
The Faculty of Social Sciences has sent you the Acceptance Letter by e-mail. In order to be able to start your studies you only need to go through the listing of courses offered during your stay and to update your learning agreement accordingly just before arriving to Helsinki. You do not need to enrol or register at the University separately, this has been taken care of by the International Mobility Services of the University.
However, you do need to enrol on the courses you wish to take during your stay in WebOodi. You can start signing up for the courses after you have received your computer user account. You can only receive the user id and password in person at the IT serve desk of the University (Kaisa House, Fabianinkatu 30).
Although it is not compulsory for the exchange students to join the Student Union of the University of Helsinki (HYY) it is highly recommeded that you become a member of the Student Union. As the member, you are entitled to many benefits and discounts (such as inexpensive meals and health services). More information on HYY is available on the web site of the Student Union.
In order to be able to start your studies, you should register at the university. Please return the registration form to the following address: Study Office, Faculty of Social Sciences, P.O. Box 54, 00014 University of Helsinki, Finland. The sooner you send the document, the better. The registration will then be completed, and after your arrival you will be able to receive your computer user account without delay.
