Research and postgraduate studies
The subject has a research tradition of more than a hundred years in the field of historical linguistics and language change. Languages are examined as a changing social phenomenon. Recent research has focused on language contacts (especially in the Balkans) and on languages in social context, including the history of literary languages, linguistic nationalism, language policy, and socio-onomastics, i.e. the social significance of proper names. Research is mainly carried out in the South Slavonic languages, but this is not our sole focus: Dr Helena Lehečková is an internationally recognized specialist in the field of Czech aphasiology.
