Aleksis Kivi’s Cottage
Aleksis Kivi's cottage is an important national monument. In this little cottage Finland's national writer and poet Aleksis Kivi (1834–1872) spent the last months of his life with his brother's family. Kivi himself was a writer ‘from below’: he wrote about lives of peasants and farmers and among other things gives vivid descriptions of troubles in acquiring literacy. During the visit we will hear passages concerning problems and difficulties in the art of reading from Kivi’s most important novel Seven Brothers in English translation.

Ainola – The home of Aino and Jean Sibelius
Ainola was the home of the celebrated Finnish composer Jean Sibelius and his family from 1904. The timber-built villa was designed by the famous Finnish architect Lars Sonck. It gave the composer the peace that he needed for his creative endeavors, while other artistic families living in the area provided a lively social circle.

The garden
The last resting place of Jean and Aino Sibelius is in the garden of Ainola, beneath apple trees. The couple was married for more than 65 years. The gravestone plaque made of bronze was designed by the architect Aulis Blomstedt, husband of Jean Sibelius’ youngest daughter.

Tuusula Church
The old wooden church of Tuusula was built in 1734. It is located by a lake and has a small graveyard around it. In the church we can orientate us to the practises of reading. A demonstration, in which you can participate, will show how the control of reading was carried out in the 18th Century Finland.

Pub Tour in Kallio

Friday 20 August from 7:00pm to 10:00pm
Price: 10 € (includes guiding and tram ticket to Kallio, food and drinks will be paid during the tour by each participant)

Max 15 participants

The guided pub tour explores Kallio, the traditional working-class district of Helsinki. Nowadays Kallio is a popular neighborhood for artists and academics, but it has maintained its working-class and slightly decadent atmosphere. Our guide is writer and philosopher Torsti Lehtinen, a native-born and long-time resident of Kallio.

The tour starts at the Senate Square at 7pm. The group will first take a tram to the heart of Kallio, where the tour begins with an informal dinner (see options below) in the traditional restaurant-pub Cella. After the dinner the group visits few other local pubs and finishes at Sture Jazz Bar, with the best jukebox in town.

Dinner alternatives at Cella are:
- Meat: Cella’s Vorschmak (Traditional meat and fish stew with Russian flavour) (12,70 €)
- Fish: Whitefish à la Helsinki (”Stadin muikut”, 13,80€)
- Vegetarian: Vegetarian cutlet with forest mushroom sauce (12,30 €)

Tram Tour

Friday 20 August from 7.30 pm to 9.00 pm
Price: 18 €

Max 50 participants

The guided tram tour with drinks on board starts on the Senate Square at 7.30 pm and takes a 90 minutes tour around Helsinki. Our guide through Helsinki will be Dr. Mikko-Olavi Seppälä, who have researched the cultural life of Helsinki of the early 20th century and also leads his own orchestra Sakilaiset, which performs early 20th-century popular songs.

The tour will use a lovely 1960s tram, used for a couple of years on route and nowadays available for charter traffic.
