Dr Penev is an entomologist specialised in ground-beetles (Carabidae) and click-beetles (Elateridae). He is interested in the ecology and biogeography of the soil mesofauna, and especially in the distribution of animals and their assemblages in relation to environmental factors.

His latest works are devoted to the concept of the 'local fauna', understood as the lowest level of faunistic organisation of the biota.
