I joined theTEAM::ANTZZ in April 2012, after completing my MSc in plant pathology at the faculty of Agriculture and Forestry in Helsinki. Switching focus from plants to ants for my PhD-project has been an intriguing challenge. Ant societies seem to live in a complex and multifaceted relationship with microbes, a relationship that hasn’t so far been studied comprehensively. I would like to know more about which fungal and bacterial species interact with the Finnish ant colonies, which microbial species are explicitly pathogenic (or mutualistic!) to ants, and which factors affect the virulence of entomopathogenic microbes.

As the group’s part time secretary, I also try to keep track of finances and people, a task that can be even more challenging than determining new fungal species!  And when I’m not chasing microbes, runaway ants or lost invoices, you’ll probably find me on board s/y Mary.
