Huge opportunities for collaborative work

As a part of the Ruralia Institute Visiting Scholars Programme, from Scotland's Rural College (SRUC) I visited University of Helsinki and its two Ruralia Institute units located in Mikkeli (Eastern Finland) and in Seinäjoki (Western Finland). The focus of my stay was on Knowledge Exchange activities and identifying opportunities for developing international collaboration between the two organisations.

During my stay I delivered a series of seminars in Mikkeli and Seinäjoki, and participated in discussions with local researchers from Ruralia Institute, Mikkeli University Consortium, Finnish Organic Research Institute and other stakeholder organisations.

There are huge opportunities for collaborative work between Ruralia Institute and SRUC. We could learn from our experience and knowledge gained through our research activities and identify best practices that could be implemented internationally to lead rural development.

Through joining a multi-organisational research consortium, the two partners had an opportunity to discuss and work on plans for implementation of a new Rural Community Shed project. The project proposal will be submitted to the EU Northern Periphery and Arctic Fund in April 2015 and, if successful, it will bring a number of partners from northern Europe to tackle challenges of rural social isolation, improve health and wellbeing of rural citizens and identify new innovative solutions for rural health and care service delivery.

I believe that this is only the beginning of a fruitful and long-term collaboration. We identified areas of joint interest and in the following months we will work together to implement a plan for strengthening links between Ruralia Institute and SRUC".
