Fees

Since higher education is mostly funded by the state through the Ministry of Education, students pay no tuition fees apart from the Open University. However, all undergraduate and graduate students are required to pay the annual Student Union (HYY) membership fee (€ 74,65 in 2008-2009). The membership fee includes a health care contribution that entitles the students to inexpensive health care. In addition, student meals, inexpensive travel options, and some other discounts are available to students upon presentation of the Student Union membership card (Lyyra Card). Please see more at The Student Union of the University of Helsinki.

Even with the inexpensive meals and health care, the cost of living in Finland may be as high as 500 euros per month. The cost of study materials varies from one field of study to another. In most cases the use of libraries is free of charge. However, some books included in course requirements might have to be bought. For some of the contact teaching periods you also need to find and pay for accommodation in Mikkeli. Information about accommodation, please ask Study Secretary Ritva Mynttinen (ritva.mynttinen@helsinki.fi)

Please note that for the studies through the Open University the student needs to pay.
