Tenure Track System

University of Helsinki has launched a tenure track system for teaching and research personnel, with the aim of enhancing the predictability, competitiveness and attractiveness of an academic career and promote international collaboration at the University.

Preconditions for election

A person may be chosen to the tenure track system, if no more than 10 years have elapsed since he or she took a doctoral degree and if the person in question has achieved promising scientific and other merits during this period. In addition to research work and teaching experience, work in other countries and other international experience are regarded as important. It is also of importance that the applicant has shown that he or she can obtain complementary research funding.

Advancement on tenure track

A person who is accepted to the tenure track system is employed as Assistant Professor for fixed-term employment, during which his or her performance will be monitored and evaluated according to the criteria defined when concluding the employment contract. Success in the evaluation will lead to new fixed-term employment as Associate Professor with the aim of eventually obtaining the tenure of a Professor.

The University will offer the tenure track appointees a challenging career opportunity in top-level research and research-based teaching, possibilities for international collaboration and prerequisites to grow into professorship.
