Selection criteria

The aim of the postdoctoral researcher positions is to encourage doctoral degree holders to seek further qualifications. Postdoctoral researchers rank on level two of the four-tier career track of teaching and research personnel at the University of Helsinki. Please note that the doctoral degree must be granted by the awarding institution prior to the closing date for applications. Furthermore, the doctoral degree is expected to have been granted no more than four years prior to application. The four-year limit may be exceeded only for particularly compelling reasons, such as maternity, paternity or parental leave, military or non-military service leave or extended sick leave. If the applicant appeals for exemption from the four-year limit, the reasons must be indicated in his or her curriculum vitae.

For 2012 applications, the applicant must have completed his or her doctoral degree between 30 March 2008 and 29 March 2012. The doctoral degree may have been completed in Finland or abroad.

The selection process will focus on the following criteria:

  • Research plan
  • Demonstrated academic competence and research experience
  • Research environment where the successful applicant will work
  • General assessment

A reorientation of research and a change of research environment will be considered assets.

Appointments for a second term will not be made without special, compelling reasons.
