Research

The University of Helsinki generates new knowledge and scholarly thinking. The University’s research is being developed into even better quality and internationally more recognised. The University profiles as a research University, especially through its basic research. The strategic choices are based on the high quality of the research. Ethical aspects are taken into account in research.

The University carries out overall assessments of research on a regular basis. Also independent units or activities, mentioned in the target contracts of the faculties and independent institutes, are assessed at the request of the University Board or the Rector. The University of Helsinki also takes part in the assessments of different fields carried out by the Academy of Finland.

The research assessment affects the University’s internal money distribution through that the units, which best succeed in the assessment, are rewarded from the University’s funds. The Research Council makes the University Board a proposition for how the results of the assessment are taken into consideration in the University’s internal money distribution between the faculties and in the faculties between the departments.
