Centres of Excellence in Research
National centres of excellence in research have been nominated in Finland since 1994, first by the Ministry of Education and nowadays by the Finnish Academy in cooperation with Tekes, The Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation. Centres of excellence are nominated to enhance the quality of Finnish science, to improve its international competitiveness, visibility and appreciation and to promote interdisciplinary research. The research and researcher training units of universities and research institutes, appointed national centres of excellence, receive special centres of excellence funding.
The University of Helsinki is an active party in 13 of 23 at the centres of excellence in research for the period 2006-2011 and in 12 of 18 for the period 2008-2013 .
