Durations of Finnish short and long vowels

Average durations of short and long Finnish vowels in stressed and unstressed positions of bisyllabic nonsense words. Carrier sentence "Tätäkö x tarkoittaa?" ("Does x mean this?") was read by 5 male and 5 female speakers. Word structures /pVVpV/ and /pVppVV/ were applied. Numerical data from Lehtonen (1970: 64).

Durations of Finnish vowels in three datasets

The figure shows that the relative durational differences are similar in three different publications (Wiik 1965, Lehtonen 1970 ja Kukkonen 1990). However, the types of data have systematically affected the absolute mean values. Kukkonen used isolated words, Wiik used isolated words and a frame sentence, and Lehtonen only used a frame sentence. It may be concluded that producing words in isolation without a frame sentence systematically lengthens the duration of vowels.
