The aim of this project is to create an up-to-date presentation of the phonetics of standard Finnish. This is achieved by combining the fruit of previous research with new results. One of the subtasks is to develop a representative digital version of the Speaking Dictionary of Finnish. The material will be published in writing, on CD-ROM, and a limited version as WWW documents.

Several computer-based tools have been used in the presentation, including

Comparison with other data or another language is usually provided.

An electronic bibliography of the phonetics of Finnish until year 1993 was compiled by Tuija Niemi at the Department of Phonetics of the University of Helsinki in 1994. This bibliography has been an important help for the present work. The Research Institute for the Languages of Finland has provided the electronic version of the Basic Dictionary of Finnish.

Pirkko Kukkonen, Mietta Lennes (web design) and Martti Vainio have participated in the project.

When collecting the word list for the Speaking Dictionary, the programs of the Department of General Linguistics of the University of Helsinki have been used with the help of Sirke Viitanen. The Speaking Dictionary is forthcoming.
