From analysis to presentation
When you have produced useful alignments and
analyses with GoCore, it is naturally desirable to show the results in
research presentations, reports or academic publications. This help page
contains tips to help you achieve this.
A few simple instructions will help to get
you started. Please remember that a bioinformatics workbook is really an
Excel workbook and that residues are stored in cells. Therefore, if you
already have a way to show Excel spreadsheet results in presentations
and publications, you can use the same method to show GoCore results.
The cut, copy and paste tools work just the same for GoCore as they do
for Excel.
Both the Raw data page and the
Analysis pages have a Swap view button that toggles between a
more "zoomed out" space-conserving visualization and a more "zoomed in"
easier-to-read visualization. You can choose between these custom views
to find the best analysis size for your presentation. Also, the
Analysis pages allow you directly resize columns and rows just as in
Excel. You can also apply additional formatting, such as boxing residues
of interest, changing the font and style, etc. |

Referencing GoCore in publications
If you use GoCore in your research, please
do remember to reference the tool. At the minimum, please mention the
tool's website :
http://www.helsinki.fi/project/ritvos/GoCore/.
Additionally, you might choose to reference
the following article in which GoCore has been applied:
Immunoneutralization
of Growth Differentiation Factor 9 Reveals It Partially Accounts for
Mouse Oocyte Mitogenic Activity.
Gilchrist RB, Ritter LJ,
Cranfield M, Jeffery LA, Amato F, Scott SJ, Myllymaa S, Kaivo-Oja N,

Extracting pictures from a bioinformatics workbook
There are a number of
ways in which you can convert the results of analyses into pictures for
inclusion in presentations and/or publications.
The
first method uses the Paint program that comes with the Windows
operating system. It is usually found in the programs list, in the
sublist called Accessories. First, launch the Paint program,
which looks as shown in the picture. |
|
|
|
Second,
select the region of the GoCore analysis that you wish to make a graphic
of. Copy that region by either choosing Copy from Excel's Edit
menu, or by clicking the right mouse button over the selected area
and choosing Copy from the dropdown menu. |
|
|
Finally,
choose the Paste option from Paint's Edit menu. The Excel
cells are converted into a graphic within Paint that can be saved by
selecting Save As from Paint's File menu. |
|
|
|
One alternative method is
to use a screen capture tool to select a region of the screen to convert
directly into a graphic. Some such tools are free, such as
PrintKey. |
