Hanna-Mari Hieta studied ethnomusicology at the University of Helsinki. Her master's thesis (2003) dealt with radio listeners, and was comprised of a survey of 250 radio listeners and their reactions to a music listening test. After the completion of her degree, Hieta was hired at the Finnish Radio Broadcasting Company to work there as a researcher.

Hanna-Mari Hieta will join the music and media research team in 2005 and will start her Ph.D. project which is entitled as "Radio listening and musical taste: A target audience under the influence of the media". This will be an empirical study based on depth-interviews with some 40 informants, and will delve into their life histories, radio listening habits, musical tastes and the impact of the media.
