Welcome to Political Science!
Political science is generally considered to be a social science which examines governance, the exercise of power, political participation and organisation, and other collective conflicts and their settlement. At the University of Helsinki, research in political science is closely connected with research in administration and organisations as well as research in international relations and global political phenomena.
Modern political science has detached itself from its traditional state‑centred approach and currently covers an extremely wide range of research targets in addition to states. For example, economic policy management, referenda, gender equality, and international trade union cooperation are included in political science research. The debate concerning the scope and nature of politics is another key aspect of political science. While some feel politics is everywhere, others consider it to be limited to a narrower context.
