The Programme of the graduate school

The core of the graduate school's programme is outlined below. In addition, doctoral students will have many more seminars, study circles etc. to attend to. The programme will be updated as the arrangements are specified.


Forthcoming events

Year 2010 – Beginning of the new OMM members’ research period. Initial and methodological studies. Focus on general theoretical and methodological studies, development of research skills and comparative research methods.

  • New researchers begin their research at OMM.
  • 21.–22.1 Kick-off seminar, old research group’s ¾ seminar and meeting with the research supervisors. New members will present their research plans and old members will report on their research progress. In addition pedagogical studies and good research supervision will be discussed. The event is directed to both new and old OMM researchers and their supervisors. Place: The University of Helsinki, Porthania, lecture room P545, Yliopistonkatu 3, 5th floor.
  • 18.–19.2. ”Law, Cultures. Practices” – seminar at the University of Lapland. The focus of the seminar is comparative law. Among speakers: Pierre Legrand, Simone Glarnet, Pia-Letto Vanamo, Heikki Mattila, Tuulikki Mikkola and Elina Helander-Renval.
  • 17.3. Pre-Lammi seminar at the University of Helsinki.
  • 18.–19.3. Two day seminar of the national research school in Lammi biological station. Topic: ”Law, Theory” Keynote speakers: Kaarlo Tuori, Jan Smits and Juha Karhu.
  • "Unruly Peoples and the Legal Public", a doctoral colloquium, the University of Glasgow, School of Law, on 3‐4 June 2010..
  • September/October. Course in Scientific Writing at the University of Helsinki or doctoral researcher’s own university (if provided).
  • October-February. Seminar on empirical research in law at the University of Eastern Finland (in Finnish only).
  • 28.10. Final seminar for researchers who began in the year 2007. Topics: systematic summary of research, instructions on finalization of doctoral studies, job market requirements and change of working environment (old doctoral researchers will present their experiences), post-doctoral research options (funding options and application process, the meaning of general strategies in science politics and taking them into account).
  • 30.11-1.12 Environmental Law Research Meeting at the University of Eastern Finland (in Finnish)
  • 14-15.12. Two day course ”Empirical research in law” in cooperation with the National Research Institute of Legal Policy (OPTULA). Place: University of Helsinki (in Finnish only)
  • Fundamental and Human Rights researchers’ meeting in the University of Turku/Åbo Akademi. (postponed to spring 2011)

Year 2011

  • 7.-8.3.2011 A two-day graduate school seminar Law, Gender, Identity . Location: Lammi Biological Station. The seminar will be open to all Nordic doctoral students.
  • April: An advanced course “Comparative Law and its Methodology”. Duration: 1 week. Location: Helsinki.
  • May. A two-day seminar on interdisciplinary legal studies. Location: University of Joensuu.
  • May. A seminar on research ethics in cooperation with National Advisory Board on Research Ethics. Location: University of Helsinki.
  • Practical training period (1–2 months). The training post ought to have a connection with the doctoral student's research and support his or her studies.
  • Optional pedagogical training, either in each doctoral student's own university or as a tailored graduate school programme. The goal is that the training can be included in the doctoral degree.
  • November: Kick off seminar for new LCW-members and affiliated researchers. 2-day seminar on doing research: about research process, research ethics, what is expected of PhD thesis, experiences from doctoral programme etc.

Year 2012

  • January: Kick off seminar for new doctoral students of City Centre Campus. Location: Helsinki.
  • Jan/Feb: Librarian skills. 3-day course. Location: Helsinki.
  • February: A course of comparative law. Location: Helsinki.
  • March: A two-day seminar Law and Culture 12.-13.3. Location: Lammi Biological Station.
  • April: A seminar on human and fundamental rights. Location: Turku.
  • May: Research seminar: New members will present their research plans and old members will report on their research progress. Location: Helsinki.

Year 2013

  • February. A two-day graduate school seminar “Law, Politics”. Location: Lammi Biological Station. The seminar will be open to all Nordic doctoral students.
  • April: A course “Chinese Law”. Duration: 2 weeks. Location: Helsinki/Beijing. Professors Juha Karhu/Teemu Ruskola. Yet to be confirmed.
  • August. International Summer School on European law.
  • December. The closing seminar of the graduate school.

Past events

Year 2007

  • 2.2.2007. Course ”Can dissertations be supervised, can supervision work be instructed?” designed for supervisors. The supervisory principles approved by the director of LCW were modelled in the course and in discussions after it. 12 participants.
  • 15.–16.3.2007. Graduate School Seminar ”Law, Ethics” at Lammi. 60 participants. The ”organization event” of LCW doctoral students was also held at the seminar.
  • 23.–25.3.2007. Nordisk workshop i straffrätt. The seminar of Nordic criminal law professors, researchers and post-graduate students, University of Lapland. 40 participants.
  • 3.5.2007. The annual afternoon meeting of the judges of the highest courts and rerearchers. The topic was ”Soft Law”. 40 participants.
  • 15.–17.8.2007. Comparative Environmental Law and Policy -workshop at the Finland’s Environmental Administration, Helsinki. In cooperation with the Environment and Law Researvch Project and the Nordic Environmental Law Network. 30 participants.
  • 30.–31.8.2007. XII National Days of Legal Science, ”Law, Economy, Administration”. 100 participants.
  • 24.–27.9.2007. Late Scummer School ”Foundations of European Law” organized by graduate school Foundations of European Law. The guests include, e.g., professor Neil Walker (EUI) and five doctoral students from EUI. 25 participants.
  • September–October 2007. The course on scientific writing. University of Helsinki. 30 participants.
  • October 2007. The doctoral students of LCW had the opportunity to participate the course on scientific writing organized by INNOCENT. 2 doctoral students of LCW participated in the course.
  • 31.10.2007. The publishing event of the professor Kaarlo Tuori’s new book ”Oikeuden Ratio ja Voluntas” in The House of Sciences, Helsinki. The event was primarily meant as a seminar on the book. The seminar was organized by LCW and the Finnish National Section of IVR. 70 participants.
  • 31.10.2007 The course ”Introduction to quantitative methods in legal research” in cooperation with the National Institute of Legal Policy. 3 doctoral students of LCW attended the course.
  • 5.–6.11.2007 Research meeting on human and fundamental rights at the University of Turku. In cooperaetion with the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi. 25 participants.
  • 26.11.2007. The discussion event ”Texts of Law as Discourses” at the House of Sciences, Helsinki. 40 participants.

Year 2008

  • 13.–14.3. A two-day graduate school seminar "Law, Economy". Location: Lammi Biological Station
  • 22.–23.5. A two-day seminar on interdisciplinary legal studies. Location: University of Joensuu.
  • 26.5. Research meeting of judges and researchers. University of Helsinki.
  • 27.5. A seminar on research ethics in cooperation with National Advisory Board on Research Ethics. Location: University of Helsinki.
