Postgraduate degrees
There are two postgraduate degrees, the Doctor of Laws degree, LL.D., (in Finnish oikeustieteen tohtori) and the Licentiate of Laws degree, LL.Lic. (in Finnish oikeustieteen lisensiaatti) at the University of Helsinki. The former is intended primarily for candidates interested in pursuing a career in research whereas the latter aims to provide practicing lawyers with professional expertise or function as one stage in doctoral studies. The doctoral degree is the primary postgraduate degree at the University of Helsinki. According to the Postgraduate Degrees Act and the Faculty’s degree provisions the estimated time to pursue the Doctor of Laws degree when studying full-time is four years. The right to take the Doctor of Laws degree can be granted on application, provided that the applicant is considered to have sufficient ability to take the degree and he/she presents an acceptable study and dissertation plan. A prerequisite for granting the right to take a postgraduate degree is that the Faculty can appoint a supervisor who supports the application and consents to act as supervisor. The applicant also has to provide proof that his/her language proficiency may be considered sufficient for participation in postgraduate studies at the faculty. Application deadlines for the right to take the postgraduate degree are by January 31st and September 30th annually. The Licentiate of Laws degree (LL.Lic.) is developed towards a professionally orientated Licentiate degree model. Applying for that study right has separate application procedure and criteria. It hasn't been possible to apply or enrol for Licentiate of Laws degree as an independent scientific postgraduate degree from 1.8.2007 onwards.
