Studies
Faculty examinations ("book exams") 2011–2012
Students may take North American Studies as a major or minor subject of a Bachelor's or Master's degree or take individual courses according to their needs. North American Studies is also available as a doctoral degree program.
Basic studies seek to give students a grounding in interdisciplinary thinking and the tradition of North American Studies, and to teach them basic issues in the history, environment, societies and cultures of the United States and Canada.
Intermediate studies deepen the students' knowledge of interdisciplinary thinking and its application to North American Studies. Courses in specific disciplines enable students to learn how North American Studies interact with traditional disciplines.
In advanced studies, the students will gain a thorough knowledge of their own specialisation and acquire the knowledge and skills required for writing a thesis. They will also focus on the methodological, theoretical and thematic studies supporting thesis writing. Master's degree students will gain extensive knowledge of the United States and Canada and will be able to undertake interdisciplinary research.
As a minor subject, North American Studies is open to all degree students at the University of Helsinki. Basic and intermediate studies can be taken freely.
