Enrolment

New student enrolment – degree students

Page is being updated and detailed information about enrolment will be available in March 2014.

Accepting a place of study

Your faculty at the University of Helsinki (UH) mails you a letter of acceptance including information on accepting your place of study as well as on submitting your enrolment documents.

Your notice on accepting the place of study is binding. Students who do not submit the notice (the Confirmation Form of Acceptance) will lose their right to study at the University of Helsinki. The Confirmation Form of Acceptance must be delivered to your faculty on the date given in the acceptance letter:

  • June 12, 2014, at 16:15 local time (GMT +2)
  • OR July 29, 2014, at 16:15 local time (GMT +2)
  • OR if you will be accepted from the waiting list the faculty will inform you of the deadline

If you do not intend to accept the place of study, please inform the faculty of your withdrawal as soon as possible!

Enrolment documents

There are documents you need to return to your faculty to complete your enrolment as a new degree student. You will receive these documents together with your acceptance letter.

These documents must be delivered to your faculty by July 29, 2014, at 16:15 local time (GMT +2) at the latest.

Conditional admission

If your acceptance to the University of Helsinki has been defined as conditional, you are also required to send an officially certified copy of the final degree certificate and its official translation (in English, Finnish or Swedish) directly to your faculty by July 29, 2014, at 16:15 local time (GMT +2).

If you fail to send the required documents by the deadline, your admission will be cancelled.

A temporary degree certificate (and its official translation in English, Finnish or Swedish) is also accepted.

The documents have to be legalized in the manner requested by the University of Helsinki. Read more about how to legalize your documents on the How to Apply page.

Student Union membership

The Student Union membership entitles you to several benefits. Please note that the fee has to be paid by a bank transfer, do not send a check or a money order to the faculty! Take a copy of the receipt for yourself – you will need it later to access a number of services at the university.

Official certification of your studies

The completion of the enrolment is crucial because no official certification of your studies can be issued by the university before that. You will receive the official certification from the Student Registrar in regular mail.

The official certification of your studies is mandatory when you are applying for a permanent address in Helsinki. All students whose degree studies last at least for two years, can be registered as permanent residents of the municipality.

Changing address

When you enrol, you give your current address. If you move to a new address later on, you should make a notice of moving. This can be made by email studentinfo@helsinki.fi or at the Student Services. When you have your username and password for the UH networks, you can do it yourself on WebOodi database system.

New student enrolment – exchange students

Exchange students are automatically enrolled at the University of Helsinki once they have been accepted to study at UH. For exchange students the Student Union fee is voluntary, but it is highly recommendable that you register for the Student Union membership.

By paying the Student Union fee, you have access to the student health care services (This does not apply to doctoral students), you can order a student card (the cost is 16.10 euro), you get a discount on meals at the Unicafe student cafeterias, etc.

New student enrolment – visiting students

You will receive the necessary forms from your faculty. Please follow the instructions issued by your faculty. It is extremely important that you accomplish the enrolment procedure at the university as soon as possible, because no official certification of your studies can be issued before that.

Students already enrolled

If you are a student already enrolled (e.g. a returning student) at the University of Helsinki, you will find more information about enrolment and registration at UH at the Studying, services and student life pages.
