More than 900 foreign students from over 60 countries begin to study at the University of Helsinki this autumn. The number is higher than ever.

International Exchange Services (IES) organise an intensive orientation course with lots of practical information about the university, studies and life in Helsinki. A Welcome Desk also serves incoming students in questions varying from public transportation to student organisations.

- Orientation courses and the Welcome Desk are intended to make it easier for students to start their first term; thus the first weeks of lectures will not be spent wondering about different matters, student exchange co-ordinator Maarit Haukka points out.

Some 600 foreign students are expected to participate in the orientation program. Afterwards, the students have their own tutors and IES to lean on.

“...to meet other people”

Eyob Talew and Zerihun Dinku, students of the Master’s Programme in Space Sciences, both have a bachelor degree from a polytechnic in Helsinki. They still participate in the orientation course to obtain basic information about the university and to meet other people.

Finnish language and literature exchange students Alina Dorn from Germany and Wu Shuang from China are about to meet their tutors. This will also be their first personal contact with the university.

- The orientation phase is a good opportunity to get to know other students, both Wu and Dorn emphasize.

One of the tutors of the international students is Vilja Liikanen who is majoring in history. Good experiences of tutoring and mentoring during her own student exchange were her inspiration in helping foreign students herself. Of course, getting to know new people and having some fun appeal to tutors as well.
