The University of Helsinki is the only Finnish university in the Times Higher Education Ranking

An updated British ranking of the best 200 universities in the world places the University of Helsinki as 102nd.

The University of Helsinki is the only Finnish university in the Times Higher Education Ranking

Among Nordic universities, the University of Helsinki was outranked only by the Swedish Karolinska Institute (ranking: 43) and the Lund University (ranking: 89). No other Finnish universities made the top 200.

Rector Thomas Wilhelmsson says that the ranking of the University of Helsinki indicates the university’s high level of quality.

- The ranking procedures always have their specific problems. The Times Higher Education Ranking clearly does not favour Nordic universities. That said, I still find it a good achievement that we are the best multidisciplinary university in Finland and the second-best in the Nordic countries, says Wilhelmsson.

- Of course, you can always improve your performance.

As usual, Harvard University in the United States was ranked first in the Times Higher Education Ranking, which was compiled with an entirely new method this time. Cambridge and Oxford, which shared fifth place, were the best European universities.

Other UK-based universities also did well in the ranking. A total of 14 UK-based and two Irish universities made the top 100. Tokyo University was the best university with instruction in another language than English, placing 26th.

Regarding the evaluation criteria, the University of Helsinki obtained its best score in citations, where the university obtained 75.4 points of a maximum of 100 points. The university obtained its lowest score in research income from industry, and the ratio of international to domestic staff.

Rector Wilhelmsson is particularly happy with the amount of citations.

- This indicates a high quality level of research.

The Rector points out that the internationality criteria favour universities where the instruction language is English.

- It is easier for them to obtain personnel from around the world.
