Kick your semester off at the opening carnival

Academic traditions, street sitsit party, martial arts demonstration, cheerful partying – the opening of the semester on Monday, 3 September, reflects the diversity of life at the University.

The new semester 2012–2013 kicks off with a carnival that will close the streets in the vicinity of the main building and Porthania for the whole afternoon of Monday, 3 September, starting at 2 p.m. A whole range of university life can be seen in the area, with diverse organisations, Unisport and alumni organisations representing their activities.

This year, there will be a record-high volume of programme on the street, including a martial arts demonstration. A street sitsit table party represent a more traditional side of academic life. Anyone may sit down for a moment to enjoy the cheerful company and drinking songs. The lobbies of the main building and Porthania are also worth visiting, featuring info booths for many of the university’s organisations.

Ville Sinnemäki, expert-producer for Student Union of the University of Helsinki’s (HYY), says that the carnival gives an insight into the diversity of leisure organisations at the University.

”There are more than a hundred organisations showcased at the carnival. New students in particular can get a good view of how extensive the activity at the university is. In addition, there is a special sense of communality at the carnival, with almost all parties from the university, starting from the management, present,” Sinnemäkis says.

Mia Waismaa, who is about to begin her studies as a daycare teacher, is going to the carnival with her friends to sample the atmosphere.

”I want to see what’s happening at the carnival. It sounds like it is worthwhile to go and see what’s on offer. In particular, I’m interested in Unisport’s sports demos,” Mia says.

Mia is also considering attending the opening party at the Vanha ylioppilastalo in the evening, featuring Herra Ylppö & Ihmiset, supported by Spiha and DJ Mikke. Tickets are already available at Café Vanha.

Before the carnival and opening party, there is the official inauguration ceremony and church. The opening of the semester can be viewed live starting at 12 noon at

The new main library of the University of Helsinki in the Kaisa building (Fabianinkatu 30) will also open its doors to the public on the same day, 3 September, at 9 a.m.
