Without cyanobacteria, natural history wouldn’t be much to talk about. Now these billions of years old microbes help the development of bioenergy and medicines.
Number of exchange students still on the increase
369 foreign exchange students, 80 more than a year ago, will make their way to the University of Helsinki this autumn.
The number of exchange students coming to the University of Helsinki has grown year after year according to Tuula Hellstedt, co-ordinator of student exchange.“The students say the most important reason for choosing Finland and Helsinki is the English-language teaching, more and more of which is available every year.”
296 of the 369 exchange students arriving this autumn will come through the European Sokrates/Erasmus programme. The number of incoming students in the programme is currently slightly higher than that of University of Helsinki students going abroad.
Exchange students also come to Helsinki through other programmes and bilateral agreements. This autumn, the University of Helsinki will receive 55 exchange students from outside Europe.
Usually approximately half of the exchange students arriving in the autumn stay in Helsinki for the whole academic year. In recent years, a little over 200 exchange students have come to Helsinki for the spring term.
As yet, there is still no data on the number of new international degree students in the various faculties. In recent years, 100 to 150 international students have begun studying towards a degree at the University of Helsinki annually.
