UH and Karolinska Institutet to found a joint doctoral programme

The programme will promote co-operation between LERU universities.

UH and Karolinska Institutet to found a joint doctoral programme The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Helsinki and the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, will jointly establish a doctoral programme in biomedicine. The first students selected for the programme will start their studies this autumn.

The students in the doctoral programme will alternate between the Karolinska Institutet and the University of Helsinki. The two universities will have joint research projects and the studies will lead to a doctoral degree in both universities.

The aim of the doctoral programme is to reinforce the scientific co-operation between the University of Helsinki and the Karolinska Institutet, while offering postgraduate students an opportunity to complete a doctoral degree in two top universities.

The joint doctoral programme will be the closest co-operation project thus far in doctoral education between the University of Helsinki and a foreign university. The idea for the co-operation was born in the League of European Research Universities (LERU).

LERU aims to promote the status of basic research in Europe, and one of its most important goals is to develop bi- and multilateral researcher education programmes. In the future, it is intended that the doctoral programme of the University of Helsinki and the Karolinska Institutet be expanded to also include other LERU universities.

Both the University of Helsinki and the Karolinska Institutet are founding members of LERU, established in 2002. Currently, the League comprises twenty European universities. The University of Helsinki is the only Finnish member.

The Karolinska Institutet is one of the most distinguished medical universities in Europe and the largest centre of medical research and education in Sweden.

The website of the Karolinska Institutet can be found at info.ki.se.
