Niemi, Tikkanen, Björkroth and Löytönen appointed Vice-Rectors at the UH

The new Vice-Rectors start their term of office in August.

flags Professors Hannele Niemi, Matti Tikkanen, Johanna Björkroth and Markku Löytönen have been appointed Vice-Rectors at the University of Helsinki.

The Electoral College has today approved Rector Thomas Wilhelmsson’s proposal for Vice-Rectors.

Hannele Niemi will continue as 1st Vice-Rector. She will continue to be responsible for educational and academic affairs, library affairs, the quality assurance system and equality. Professor Niemi is a Professor of Education from the City Centre Campus.

Vice-Rector Matti Tikkanen will have responsibility for international affairs and international research cooperation, contacts with government research centres and the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (HUS), the innovation system, human resources policy and bilingual matters. Professor Tikkanen is a Professor of Internal Medicine at the Meilahti Campus. He is long-time Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and is a member of the University Senate.

Responsibility for science and researcher training belongs to Johanna Björkroth, who continued as Vice-Rector. She is Professor of Food Hygiene at the Viikki Campus.

Vice-Rector Markku Löytönen will be responsible for interaction with society and information technology. He is Professor of cultural geography at the Kumpula Campus and the 1st Vice Dean of the Faculty of Science.

The 1st Vice-Rector will be employed full-time while the other Vice-Rectors will be part-time. The new Vice-Rectors start their terms of office in August.
