Without cyanobacteria, natural history wouldn’t be much to talk about. Now these billions of years old microbes help the development of bioenergy and medicines.
Renovation of Porthania begins next autumn
The renovation of the University’s Porthania building, beginning next autumn, will be finished by the start of the autumn term 2006. All activities presently taking place in the building will be relocated for the duration of the renovation.
The moving process starts in June with Career Services relocating to the Main Building. The departments of the Faculty of Law will move next-door to Heimola for the autumn, and the mathematicians now lodging there are to relocate to Kumpula. The library of the Faculty of Law will be moved to Fabianinkatu. The Unicafe in Porthania will be closed for the whole of the renovation process. Lectures and other forms of teaching will take place in other premises at the City Centre Campus.
The renovation will encompass the panels of the façade, the ventilation system, the windows, and some of the maintenance and staff facilties. Only small changes will be made to the division of room space. An inner gateway connecting the 3rd floor of Porthania with Learning Centre Alexandria will also be constructed.
Designed by Aarne Ervi, Porthania was completed in 1957. Porthania is a protected building.
