Nine applicants for the position of rector of the University of Helsinki

The Board of the University shall select the rector for a fixed term of no more than five years in its meeting on 12 June.

The following nine people applied for the position of rector of the University of Helsinki by the deadline:

Doctor of Philosophy Ulla-Maija Forsberg, 52, is professor of Finno-Ugrian language studies at the University of Helsinki. She served as the dean of the Faculty of Arts in 2007–2009 and assumed the position of first vice rector in 2010.

Doctor of Philosophy Keijo Hämäläinen, 49, is professor of physics at the University of Helsinki. He assumed the position of the dean of the Faculty of Science in 2010.

Doctor of Laws Jukka Kekkonen, 59, is professor of legal history and Roman law at the University of Helsinki. He served as the dean of the Faculty of Law in 2004–2009.

Doctor of Science in Agriculture and Forestry Jukka Kola, 53, is professor of agricultural policy at the University of Helsinki. He served as the dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry in 2004–2009 and assumed the position of vice-rector in 2010.

Doctor of Philosophy Laura Kolbe, 55, is professor of European history at the University of Helsinki.

Doctor of Philosophy Jari Niemelä, 55, is professor of urban ecology at the University of Helsinki. He assumed the position of dean of the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences in 2004.

Doctor of Laws Kimmo Nuotio, 54, is professor of criminal law at the University of Helsinki. He assumed the position of the dean of the Faculty of Law in 2010.

Doctor of Medicine and Surgery Risto Renkonen, 52, is professor of glycobiology at the University of Helsinki. He assumed the position of the dean of the Faculty of Medicine in 2010.

One applicant has requested a confidential application process.

The Board of the University shall select the rector for a fixed term of no more than five years in its meeting on 12 June.

The current rector, Thomas Wilhelmsson, will assume his position as University Chancellor on 1 June. First Vice-Rector Ulla-Maija Forsberg will serve as interim rector until the new rector is appointed and begins his or her term.
