The Crèche run by the Student Union of the Helsinki University HYY help in reconciling family life and studies.

University’s Equality Prize for Student Union Crèche The Maikki Friberg Equality Prize of the University of Helsinki was awarded to the Crèche maintained by the Student Union of the Helsinki University HYY. The prize was presented to the representatives of the Student Union on Tuesday May 17. The prize was 4,200 euros.

The childcare services are an example of support for students who have families. The Crèche is open to all members of the Student Union, including postgraduate students. The staff of the facility is professional and speaks several languages.

The Crèche does not replace full-time or part-time day care, but offers a solution to temporary, short-term childcare problems. The students can drop off their children at the childcare centre for the duration of a lecture or an exam, and they receive professional care for a small fee.

The childcare services also help students on parental leave to continue with their studies and thus hasten their graduation.

The annual equality prize, named after a pioneer in women’s issues, Maikki Friberg, is awarded for equality measures taken in the University of Helsinki.

The prize has been awarded since 1995, and is the first equality prize in Finnish universities.
