Ilkka Niiniluoto wins the candidate election for Chancellor of the University of Helsinki

The President of the Republic will appoint the new Chancellor, who will start in the post at the beginning of June.

Rector Ilkka Niiniluoto (62), Professor of Theoretical Philosophy, came first in the candidate election for Chancellor of the University of Helsinki on 10 April 2008. The Electoral College nominated First Vice-Rector Hannele Niemi (59), Professor of Education, second, and Vice-Rector Thomas Wilhemsson (58), Professor of Civil and Commercial Law, third.

The President of the Republic will appoint the new Chancellor from among the candidates. The new chancellor will start in the post at the beginning of June. The current chancellor Kari Raivio, Professor of Perinatal Medicine, will retire at the end of May.

According to the Universities Act, the University of Helsinki shall have a Chancellor who shall promote science and scholarship, look after the general interests of the university and supervise its activities. The Chancellor shall be a person who has a distinguished record in working in research and academia.
