The candidates for the post of Chancellor are Niemi, Niiniluoto and Wilhelmsson

Chancellor candidates will be elected at the University of Helsinki on 10 April 2008.

Alt-tekstin paikka An Electoral College will elect three candidates, from among whom the President of the Republic will appoint a Chancellor. The new Chancellor will begin his or her five-year term of office as of the beginning of June.

The nomination of candidates ended on Friday 14 March 2008. The shortlist of candidates is the following:

Hannele Niemi (b. 1948), I Vice-Rector from 2003 and Professor of Education at the University of Helsinki from 1998.

Ilkka Niiniluoto (b. 1946), Rector of the University of Helsinki from 2003 and Professor of Theoretical Philosophy since 1981.

Thomas Wilhelmsson (b. 1949), Vice-Rector from 1998 and Professor of Civil and Commercial Law from 1981.

The Central Election Committee of the University of Helsinki will confirm the candidates for the post of Chancellor at its meeting on Tuesday 18 March. All university staff have had an opportunity to have their say about the election of candidates: any ten people affiliated with the university can submit a candidate for the post once the candidate in question has agreed to stand.

Under the Universities Act, the Chancellor is in charge of promoting the sciences and supervising the interests and activities of the University. The Chancellor should be someone who has meritoriously worked to promote science or academia.

Election of Rector on 27 may

The election of candidates for the post of Rector will start on 14 April and end on 5 May. An Electoral College will elect a Rector on 27 May and appoint the Vice-Rectors upon nomination by the Rector on 10 June. The new appointees will begin their term of office as of the beginning of August.

Presentations of the candidates for the post of Chancellor will be available on the election website www.helsinki.fi/election2008 from Monday 31 March.
