Honorary title of Academician awarded to Professor Päiviö Tommila

The President of the Republic Tarja Halonen bestowed the honorary title of Academician upon historian, Professor Päiviö Tommila on Tuesday, 23 March.

Päiviö Tommila Professor Päiviö Tommila (b. 1931), PhD, is one of the most prominent figures of Finnish historical research. He served as Professor of Finnish History at the Universities of Helsinki and Turku until his retirement in 1994. He was Rector of the University of Helsinki in 1988-1992 and he has served as Dean at both Helsinki and Turku.

In Finland Professor Tommila is known first and foremost for his leadership of major history projects as well as for the work he has done as editor of the series of volumes produced as a result of these projects. This work has greatly added to our understanding of Finnish history.

The title of Academician is the highest honour that can be conferred on a scientist in Finland. It is presented upon the proposal of the AcademyŽs Board. No more than twelve Finnish scientists can hold the honorary title of Academician at a time.
