Universities are working towards a common user authentication

With distributed user authentication students and staff could log on the web services of other universities in Finland.

Learning centre Aleksandria The IT services of different universities and the Finnish IT Centre for Science (CSC) are proposing the implementation of a user authentication system crossing the borders between universities. In this model, universities and organisations producing joint services will set up a federation or ”trust network” which would make the final decision about the introduction of the user authentication system.

The infrastructure would be implemented gradually and it would be based on the open Shibboleth technology developed by American universities. A prototype of the system has been in use in the Finnish Virtual University portal since December.
