The University works to build a fairer society

The University of Helsinki wants to operate actively on behalf of humanity and a fair society and to cement its position as one of the world’s best multidisciplinary research universities.

The University works to build a fairer society

“At the same time as we aim to improve the standard of teaching and research, the social responsibility of our university is increasingly being emphasised,” says Rector Thomas Wilhelmsson, commenting on the new strategic direction of the University of Helsinki.

Enhancing social responsibility, however, means that the university considers national and global challenges more systematically in its operations.

“Teaching, research and other activities at the university all affect – as they should – people's well-being and the fairness of our society,” Wilhelmsson points out.

Research carried out at the University of Helsinki is already considered to be of high quality. This is borne out by the international evaluation of the university’s research and various university rankings in which the University of Helsinki has been among the world’s top one hundred universities for several years. This group comprises less than one per cent of the world’s approximately 15,000 universities.

On the teaching front, one of the key areas for development is improving the student-teacher ratio. In practice, this means that teachers will have more time to guide their students.

The University of Helsinki will support the implementation of its new strategy through five operational programmes that will put forward concrete actions as well as define the responsibilities and resources. The operational programmes will be devised during the spring and the new strategy will be adopted in 2010.

“The strategy has been unanimously approved, and provides an excellent guideline for steering the university’s operations in the new situation,” says Wilhelmsson.
