New university for technology, business and art and design

Working group proposes that three universities are merged.

Alt-tekstin paikka One of the spearhead projects for the working groups appointed by the Ministry of Education for the structural development of the university sector has been that aiming at developing cooperation between Helsinki University of Technology, Helsinki School of Economics and the University of Art and Design Helsinki.

The planning group has now submitted its unanimous proposal to the Ministry of Education for the creation of a new, research- oriented university from the three existing, academically autonomous institutes of higher education.

The working group stresses that establishing a strong and structurally unique university is a national project that will benefit the entire Finnish national economy.

Under the Universities Act, the function of the new university will be scientific research, higher education and interaction with the surrounding society. Its special national mission will be to employ research and education to support the success of Finland in the international economy. At the same time, the university will make a positive contribution to Finnish society, its technology, economy, culture and international appeal.

The goal for the new university is to be one of the leading institutions in the world in terms of research and education in its own specialised disciplines by 2020.

"The new university concept is highly ambitious and will open up entirely new prospects for university development, particularly for the three universities involved. Creative cross-disciplinary cooperation between these universities will enable completely new initiatives in teaching and research," says Yrjö Sotamaa, Rector of the University of Art and Design Helsinki.
