The application period for master’s degree programmes for international students has begun ! The University of Helsinki offers almost 40 two-year programmes entirely in English. The application period for these programmes runs from 21 November 2011 to 31 January 2012. The range is immense: economics, ethnic relations, international business law, biomathematics, neuroscience and dozens of other subjects.

Those dreaming of becoming a teacher can also choose another route. The application period for the Subject Teacher Education Programme in English, also known as STEP, for the 2012–2013 academic year runs until 1 March 2012.

Christian Franklin from Brighton, England, has lived in Finland for more than ten years. He attended STEP at its piloting stage and so was among the very first students. “I know some Finnish, but of course I can get more out of education in my native language,” he says.

Franklin has a BSc in biology from the University of London and his goal is to qualify as a subject teacher in biology and chemistry. “Here in Finland I have worked in a primary school. I think teaching is my calling.”

“From the very beginning the STEP sessions were very rewarding. I came to the university straight from the classroom and would often discover something that I definitely would have used in my teaching had I only known about it. I want to make my students realise that problems can be fun. Let your mind fly and find a solution! This is something that applies to life in general as well.”

About half of the STEP students have Finnish as their native language – the other half have foreign backgrounds. For immigrants who do not speak Finnish STEP offers an opportunity to qualify as a subject teacher while learning the language.
