Hyytiäinen stressed that 2005 was a particularly challenging year for department heads because of the extra workload due to the new salary system.

The patron of the Department Head of the Year campaign, Chancellor Kari Raivio, said that the university is not the easiest environment for management.

“Academics don’t like to be bossed around. Managing academic staff has to be done in a manner that they can accept. Management is, however, paramount, and the best method is to lead the way by one’s own example,” said Raivio.
