The University of Helsinki is still among the best

The University of Helsinki is 72nd in the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2009.

The ranking of the University of Helsinki dropped a bit. The ranking is four places lower than in 2008, but one place higher than in 2007. Among the European universities, the University of Helsinki was 21st.

“Our ranking stays about the same from year to year,” says Thomas Wilhelmsson, the Rector of the University of Helsinki. “This says we have a stable level of research.”

The ranking of the University of Helsinki is dragged down by the university's only Nobel Prize, A.I. Virtanen’s Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1945, sinking ever deeper in history and the proportional decrease in cited research done at the University of Helsinki.

Wilhelmsson notes that the University of Helsinki still fares reasonably well in the citations comparison measuring the significance of research.

“When looking at just the number of citations, the University of Helsinki would be ranked at around 50th or so," he points out.

The list compiled by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy is topped by the U.S. universities Harvard, Stanford, and Berkeley. The highest ranked Nordic university was the University of Copenhagen, which was ranked 43rd. The highest ranked Swedish university was the Karolinska Institute 50th. East of the border, success was more modest. The Moscow State University was a few places behind Helsinki at 77th, while the Saint Petersburg State University was ranked among the top 300-400.

The other Finnish universities among the top 500 were the universities of Jyväskylä, Oulu, Kuopio, and Turku. The universities of Turku and Oulu were in the top 300–400, while Jyväskylä and Kuopio were left in the top 400–500.

There are approximately 15,000 educational institutions categorised as universities in the world. The most esteemed rankings for them are the Shanghai ranking, which emphasises research, and the more education-oriented British ranking, The Times Higher Education. On this year’s Times’s list, the University of Helsinki was ranked 108th.
