Vice-Rector Ulla-Maija Forsberg, under whose remit rankings fall, is delighted about the improved position.

– The differences are small, which is why the list changes from one year to the next, but making it to the top 100 is absolutely marvellous, she says.

Times Higher Education's list of the world's top universities ranks them by comparing the standard of teaching and learning environments, as well as the volume and quality of research and citations. International outlook and industry income are also relevant to the ranking, but to a lesser degree.

Forsberg thinks that the University of Helsinki has particularly improved in the aspect of internationalisation.

– The number of international students is on a slow but steady increase. English-language Master’s degree programmes attract students from abroad.

Having grabbed a position in the Top 100 on the Times Higher Education list, the University of Helsinki is now among the best one hundred in all three major university rankings. In the Top Universities ranking, Helsinki was 89th and in the Shanghai Jiao Tong ranking 74th.

The Times Higher Education list is now topped by Caltech, the California Institute of Technology, overtaking Harvard, which held the top position for years. Placed fourth, the University of Oxford was the best European university.

In addition to Helsinki, other Nordic universities to make Top 100 were Karolinska Institute (32nd), the Lund University (80th) and the Uppsala University (87th). No other Finnish universities were included among the best 200 universities.

However, the list of the 400 best universities, published now for the first time, features the Aalto University, the University of Eastern Finland and the University of Tampere (positions 301-250) and the University of Turku (positions 351-400).
