Leena Palotie elected as Foreign Associate of the Institute of Medicine, the US National Academies

Academy Professor Leena Palotie was elected last night as a Foreign Associate of the National Academies USA, Institute of Medicine (IOM).

The IOM announced its new members and foreign associates last night. In addition to 65 American scientists, the IOM also honoured five distinguished scientists by election to foreign associate membership, one of whom is Academy Professor Leena Palotie.

According to IOM President Harvey V. Fineberg, the newly elected members are individuals who have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care, and public health. The election to the IOM is one of the highest honours in the fields of medicine and health.

In the past few weeks, Leena Palotie has also received two other distinctions: the Erik K. Fernström Foundation’s Nordic Prize and the European science prize for biomedical research, Prix van Gysel.
