Without cyanobacteria, natural history wouldn’t be much to talk about. Now these billions of years old microbes help the development of bioenergy and medicines.
Electronic admissions services for international first degree students
International Admissions Service to help international students.
The University of Helsinki launched a project aimed at improving the admissions services for international students and harmonising the student recruitment of different faculties. The result was International Admissions Service (IAS), which provides general advice to foreign applicants and handles all international applications.
“Previously, international students’ applications and selection was mainly handled separately by each faculty. This led to a situation in which nobody had sufficient expertise to, for example, assess foreign certificates and school diplomas,” says Markus Laitinen, Director of International Affairs in the University of Helsinki.
From the applicants’ point of view, the biggest change brought on by IAS is the electronic application form for first degree students, introduced in November 2005.
“The new service makes applying to the university as easy as possible. The applicants no longer need to send several e-mails, letters or cards to obtain the necessary papers,” says Laitinen.
After filling out the electronic application form, the applicant is notified of the receipt of the application and further information on which enclosures and additional information is required.
The further development of IAS will reveal how and to what extent it could also serve postgraduate students.
The application period for international degree students to the University of Helsinki ends on 31 January 2006.
