University of Helsinki aims at remaining among the best

The University of Helsinki has received a new strategy for the period 2004–2006. According to the strategy, the University aims at maintaining its position among the best research universities in Europe.

The new strategy aims higher, and with more emphasis on the University's third mission, than the previous strategies. The third mission means primarily the university's influence as a regional and social actor.

Although the strategy talks about the importance of the third mission, naturally, it also emphasises the two other important missions of the University of Helsinki, research and teaching.

- All operations derive from top-class research, says Rector Kari Raivio.

- Research has to be incorporated more effectively as a basis for teaching. Social co-operation and regional impact, which bring added value, can only be founded on the expertise brought about by research.
