Welcome to Musicology Home Page!
At the University of Helsinki, Musicology, students may focus on one of the following specialisation areas during intermediate and advances studies: general musicology, ethnomusicology and computer-aided musicology. Basic studies are the same for all.
General musicology focuses mainly on Western art music as a historical, aesthetic and philosophical phenomenon. Ethnomusicology examines music as a representation of culture. Typical ethnomusicological research topics include popular and folk music and musical cultures outside Europe. Today, a cultural approach is also applied in researching audiovisual media and Western art music. Ethnomusicology gives students competencies to critically analyse the diversity of musical cultures. Computer-aided music research focuses on the use of computers and other technology in the study of music. Research topics include computer-aided music analysis, studio technology, music application programming, and electronic and computer music.
