Interaction with society

The humanities are at the core of civilisation by virtue of their natural connection with human life and need for knowledge. Therefore, societal interaction has always been typical for university instructors in humanities. Societal interaction includes public appearances in various fora, media visibility, extension education, popular science publications and expert duties in a variety of committees.

Community relations entail, for instance, public appearances in different forums, media visibility, continuing education, publications written for general audiences and expert duties in various committees. Researchers and teachers cooperate with language teaching in primary and secondary education, the media as well as with the alumni and other partners.

The Department’s most important contribution to society is education: graduates disseminate the research-based knowledge and the Department’s expertise in society at large.

The Department has a community relations working group that seeks to systematise, organise and promote the staff’s societal engagement. A Department representative is also involved in the corresponding Faculty-level working group.
