Travel

Travel requests and travel expenses reports are handled electronically in SAP. You can find instructions on how to use the system in Alma, the university intranet. Please note that your travel request must be submitted before you travel in order to get later reimbursed for the expenses.
If you are not employed by the university (ie. you are working on a grant, for example) you don't automatically have the rights for making travel requests and expenses reports in SAP. The user rights may be requested using HERO, or if that does not work, from Riitta-Liisa Nikula.
For booking your flights you should usea Area traveling agency. By using the online self-service booking system (Area Pro Online implemented in SAP) you save quite a bit in service fees. The instructions for Area Pro Online are available here.
Before your travel you should also familiarize yourself with the university traveling instructions (in Finnish only).
To fund your trip there are several grants that you may apply. The Research and industrial services of the University of Turku maintain a research funding database (in Finnish only) and publish quarterly newsletters listing all up-coming funding opportunities. Also, researchers and teachers as well as postgraduate students at the University of Helsinki may apply for Chancellor’s travel grants to cover the costs of foreign travel for academic purposes.
In addition, LUOVA has allocated some funds for students to be used for attending training events or working on a PhD thesis project abroad. More info on LUOVA travel funds can be found here.
