LUOVA's travel funding

Tengmalm's owl

LUOVA has allocated some funds to promote international training of its students. There are two different types of funds available:

1. Funding for attending international PhD courses and workshops, or for short term visits to research laboratories abroad

Please note that this funding is specifically aimed at training events - not at scientific congresses and the like. If you are a full-time student with LUOVA, you can apply for this funding (regardless of where the funding for your PhD work comes from).

This form of funding may be applied continuously but the applications will be reviewed four times a year: in February, May, August, and November. Free form applications for the funding should be sent to luova-info(at)helsinki.fi by the 16th of August 2012. The maximum amount of expenses covered by this form of funding is 1000 euros and each student may receive it for one travel per year. Funding may not be applied retrospectively.

If you are planning to apply LUOVA funding for your travel, please contact the coordinator well in advance to let her/him know of your intent. This way if there are any unclarities they may be sorted out already prior to sending the actual application.

Please, include in your application at least the following information:
the topic, supervisor and schedule of your thesis work (when you started and when you aim to finish),
when and where you would be going,
how this travel relates to your own PhD project,
a detailed plan of expenses,
and in case of a course or a workshop:
address to a website describing the course or other source of further information
information on whether you have been accepted on the course already, or if not when you will receive the decision

You may still apply for funding even if you have not received a decision about being accepted to the course. In such a case, explain the situation in your application. LUOVA will handle your application but if funding is granted its use is conditional to being accepted on the course. If you are not accepted on the course you cannot use the granted funding for other purposes but you may apply again. The same applies if the course gets cancelled but not if you decide not to go after all. So think carefully for which purpose you apply.

If the total expenses exceed 1000 euros, please indicate how you intend to cover expenses not covered by LUOVA. You should also note that several organisations, like Nordforsk, BES etc. offer convenient sources of funding for students attending their courses. Hence, you might first want to check whether this type of funding is already available in association with your target course. See also general forms of funding, like Chancellor's travel grant for postgraduate students.

2. Funding for long-term visits to research laboratories abroad

LUOVA offers funding for PhD students to visit a research laboratory abroad for two weeks or longer to learn a method or collaborate on a PhD thesis chapter. The aim of this funding is to give LUOVA students the best possible training for their PhD and help to establish collaboration networks that extend beyond the local research community.

If you are planning to apply LUOVA funding for your visit, please contact the coordinator well in advance to let her/him know of your intent. This way if there are any unclarities they may be sorted out already prior to sending the actual application.

Free form applications for the funding should be emailed to luova-info(at)helsinki.fi by the 16th of August 2012. The maximum amount of expenses covered by this grant is 2500 euros and it may not be applied retrospectively.

Please, include in your application at least the following information:
the topic, supervisor and schedule of your thesis work (when you started and when you aim to finish),
when and where you would be going,
how this travel relates to your own PhD project,
a detailed plan of expenses

To accompany the application for long-term visit funding, a letter of invitation from the receiving institute and a letter of support by the PhD supervisor must be submitted by e-mail to luova-info(at)helsinki.fi by the application deadline.

LUOVA will support expenses up to 2500 euros. If the cost of your visit is likely to exceed this, please indicate how you intend to cover expenses not supported by LUOVA. Please note that this funding does not cover expenses resulting from data collection.
