PhD degree requirements

Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences

A postgraduate student may request the degree diploma - it is not issued automatically - after all the degree requirements have been met and the doctoral thesis has been approved by the faculty council. You can find more information on graduation here.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree requirements:

1. MSc degree (or equivalent) and the major and minor licentiate studies listed below, or a PhLic degree
2. 500078 Doctoral dissertation approved by the faculty council


Licentiate in Philosophy (PhLic) degree requirements:

You can find a Finnish list of licentiate and doctoral degree requirements in the studies guidebook of the faculty (starting from page 189 in this pdf). Below are the requirements for Ecology and Evolutionary Biology major translated in English by LUOVA coordinator. Please refer to the guidebook for the requirements in your major.

MSc degree (or equivalent)
2.
Major and minor studies (60 ECT in total)
52134 Licentiate seminar, 4 ECT
52191 Licentiate examination, 12 ECT
58555 Literature review (in English), 8 ECT
52190 Other postgraduate studies, 36 ECT in total, for example from the following:
  Attending a research seminar in a foreign language (English) for one term,
2 ECT
  Poster or talk in a foreign language (English), 2 ECT/each (max. 12 ECT)
  Assisting in Master's thesis supervision, 4 ECT/thesis (max. 12 ECT)
  A scientific paper (not included in the dissertation) in a peer reviewed journal,
2 ECT/paper (max. 12 ECT)
  Teaching: 10 h of lecturing or 20 h as a course assistant, without pay 2 ECT,
with pay 1 ECT (max. 12 ECT)
  Moreover, Nordic postgraduate courses, courses arranged by doctoral programmes and similar are suitable for postgraduate studies

Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry

In the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry a minumum of 60 ECTs of postgraduate studies and a doctoral disseration are required for a doctoral degree. Postgraduate studies should include a minimum of 15 ECTs of general and a minumum of 45 ECTs of field-specific studies. The student does not automatically receive a diploma; it will be issued upon a written application.
