Information Resources on the Web, 2x45min.
Target group The course suits well needs of students making their Bachelor's or Master's seminar. It suits also needs of everybody who wants to update information literacy skills.
Preceding studies You know the basics of using the computer.
Aim The main focus is in the web information resources of the following subject areas: pharmacy, veterinary medicine, forestry, agriculture, biosciences, and environmental sciences. You will learn to find books and articles about a specific subject, e.g. for writing an essay; you will be able to define suitable search terms, perform a search in a database and evaluate the retrieved data.

  • A general picture of available information resources and information retrieval
    • Nelli Portal
    • Library catalogues
    • Electronic journals
    • Reference databases e.g. Web of Science, ProQuest, Medline, Scopus
    • Help how to identify and use relevant information resources

RefWorks - Reference Management Software, 2x45 min.
Target group The course suits well needs of students starting their Bachelor's or Master's seminar.
Preceding studies You have experience of using databases. If you don't have basic information retrieval skills, you should attend the course Information Resources on the Web.
Content RefWorks is a Web-based bibliography manager.
In the course we will learn the basic functions of Refworks
  • import references from reference databases and electronic journals
  • create own personal database
  • use references in writing papers and automatically format the paper and the bibliography

Implementation and methods Training takes place in computer classroom.

 

 

Advanced Information Retrieval, 2 hours

The course is for those who already have basic information retrieval skills. The content of the course depends on the specific information needs of the participants. The following topics will be covered

  • advanced retrieval techniques in reference databases, such as Web of Science, CAB Abstracts, Medline
  • alert services

The main focus is in the information resources of the following subject areas: pharmacy, veterinary medicine, forestry, agriculture, biosciences, and environmental sciences.
