E-books
E-books that have been purchased to Helsinki University Library can be found at the databases Helka or Nelli.
Helka
It is possible to find solely e-books at Helka searching by subject , e.g." e-books on cereals."
- Use command search: elektroninen and cereal?
- If you want e-books both in English and in Finnish, use also Finnish words
- elektroninen and (cereal? or vilja?)
Search results may also include e-journals. To rule out the journals -> Click Post limit
Next page: select Item type: books and click Set limits
Nelli
Nelli´s quick links include e-books. The books appear as packages which vary by function. One search on Nelli may lead to a package which can include only few or hundreds of whole texts.
Various book packages are readable in slightly different ways.
- Many e-books are ready to read by clicking the PDF e.g. Knovel and CRC –books.
- To get hold of Dawsonera's e-books you have to sign into the service by your university account (nevertheless you already may be signed on the university net).
- You can download whole Dawsonera books from 1 to 3 days on your own laptop or memory stick within the Helsinki University network.
- Remote use (with proxy server) is also possible.
- To reach the site for downloading, click the name of your chosen book on the front page of the Dawsonera collection. Choose the no. of days (1-3) from the drop-down menu and then click the Download button. You can now save the book on your laptop or memory stick.
- Please note that you have to open the downloaded book for the first time on the internet (perhaps right after downloading). After that it is possible to read the book without internet connection.
- However, you must have Acrobat 7 or a newer version on your computer.
- Also note that limited copying and printing is allowed only when reading online. You cannot copy or print if you have downloaded the whole book.
- Last but not least, please remember to accept the notice concerning Dawsonera when opening the book.
- Ellibs' e-books have to be loaned using your personal library card. In addition, to read Ellibs' books you may have to download Adobe Digital Edition –reading programme. (However, the Adobe should be ready to use on the computers at the University Library.) At home you can install Adobe Digital Edition free: http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/
- You can download whole Dawsonera books from 1 to 3 days on your own laptop or memory stick within the Helsinki University network.
The e-book packages include a large number of books that have not been bought by the University Library and thereby cannot be read. In order to get only the reachable books on your screen choose:
- My subscription (e.g. Knovel)
- Full Access Content Only (CRC-books)
- Remove tabs from "include not owned" on Dawsonera's "advanced search" –page.
