About the Library - key facts and figures

The Helsinki University library system (which includes the National Library of Finland) in brief (2007 data):

  • Library visitors: over 2 million
  • Local lending of library material: 3.3 million
  • Outgoing interlibrary loans: 23,000. Received interlibrary loans: 10,400.
  • The libraries provided information-retrieval training to 10,000 persons.
  • The libraries’ collections comprised over 3.4 million printed books and 63,800 periodicals.
  • The collections expanded in the number of purchased books by 39,500 shelf units, and in terms of periodicals, by 5,800 shelf units.
  • The University’s online network included approximately 18,000 e-journals and 300 databases.
  • The number of employees totalled 561: 276 were employed in the Helsinki University libraries and 285 in the National Library of Finland.
  • Total expenditures: € 36.9 million (Helsinki University libraries: € 18.9 million, National Library of Finland: € 18.0 million).
